The president-elect of the Oxford Union has been ousted from office after failing a vote of confidence that came after his controversial social media posts about the conservative activist.

The vote against the student leader reached the necessary two-thirds threshold to remove him from office, according to an statement from the organization.

Disputed Comments

The dispute began after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on online platforms that appeared to welcome the death of the American conservative figure, who was shot dead while addressing a university in Utah.

According to sources, one social media message reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.

The president-elect is also reported to have posted in a messaging group with fellow students seeming to express approval of the event.

Vote Outcome

The no-confidence motion was conducted over the recent days, with outcomes revealed on this week.

Official notices showed that 1,228 ballots were cast supporting no confidence, while 501 were against the motion.

The notice stated that the president-elect was deemed to have stepped down in accordance with the society's regulations.

Election Controversies

Voting operations were informally suspended early on the previous day after the returning officer was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.

In a response, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the count had been stopped because election administrators believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of process errors".

His statement categorically refuted that any representative acting for George had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.

Continuing Controversy

The student stated that extremely serious issues had been submitted to the governing body and that he remained president-elect.

His statement added that George was "proud and thankful to have the backing of well in excess of a majority of students at Oxford" who supported a "secure voting process and resist attempts to subvert democracy".

Opponents have said that any decision to keep him would "signal to the world that the society has prioritized politics over principles".

External Reactions

On recently, Kirk's former chief of staff presented an public message to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.

The letter criticized the union of becoming a institution where "presidents of the union publicly celebrate the assassination of a political opponent".

The statement indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, Kirk's allies would "personally contact every American political speaker who has ever graced the union's chamber and advise them against future participation".

The Oxford Union had earlier condemned Mr Abaraonye's comments after Kirk's death and stated that complaints filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.

The student leader had been one of several students to discuss with the activist at the society in spring.
